How Carer's Allowance works

What it is

Carer's Allowance is a weekly benefit for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial needs. For 2026/27 it is £86.45 a week, which is about £4,495 a year. You do not have to live with, or be related to, the person you care for.

The earnings limit

You can work and still claim. Your earnings must be £204 a week or less after tax, National Insurance and certain expenses, such as the cost of care for the person you look after or for a child. Going over the limit in a week can stop that week's payment, so it is worth watching if your hours vary.

Who it must be for

The person you care for must already get a qualifying disability benefit, such as Attendance Allowance, the daily living part of Personal Independence Payment, or Disability Living Allowance at the middle or highest care rate. Only one person can claim for the same individual.

Effect on other benefits

Carer's Allowance counts as income for some means-tested benefits. It can also mean the person you care for loses a severe disability premium. Check how it fits with your other support before you claim, for example with the GOV.UK benefits checker or Carers UK. In Scotland the benefit is replaced by Carer Support Payment, which has its own rules.

What this calculator assumes

  • The rate is £86.45 a week and the earnings limit is £204 a week, the 2026/27 figures on GOV.UK.
  • You live in England or Wales. Scotland has a separate benefit, Carer Support Payment.
  • It does not cover residency tests, age limits, overlapping benefits or underlying entitlement. It is a first check, not a decision.

Questions people ask

How many hours do I need to care for?

At least 35 hours a week. This can include help with personal care, appointments, shopping, cooking and other household tasks.

Can I get Carer's Allowance and work?

Yes, as long as your earnings after tax, National Insurance and allowable expenses are £204 a week or less.

What if more than one person cares for the same person?

Only one of you can claim Carer's Allowance for that person, even if you share the caring.

How do I claim?

You apply on GOV.UK, or by post. Claims can be backdated for up to three months in some cases, so do not delay if you think you qualify.
