How Council Tax works

Bands and the Band D figure

Every home in England is placed in a band from A to H, based on its value in 1991. Your council sets a Band D charge each year, and every other band is a fixed share of it: Band A is 6/9 of Band D, Band B is 7/9, Band C is 8/9, Band E is 11/9, Band F is 13/9, Band G is 15/9 and Band H is double.

Discounts

If you are the only adult in your home, you usually get 25% off. Some households are exempt or can get a reduction, for example full-time students, people with a severe mental impairment or some disabled people. If you are on a low income, see Council Tax Reduction.

How you pay

Most councils collect over 10 months, April to January, but you can usually ask for 12 monthly payments. If you are struggling to pay, speak to your council early and see our free debt help page.

Challenging your band

If you think your band is wrong, you can check it on GOV.UK and challenge it. Take advice first, because in rare cases a band can go up as well as down.

What this calculator assumes

  • It uses the English band ratios. Scotland and Wales use different band systems and ratios.
  • The Band D figure you enter is the total for your area, including any police, fire and parish elements.
  • Discounts are applied to the whole bill. Your council has the final say on what applies to you.

Questions people ask

What is my Band D charge?

Your council publishes it each spring, usually on its Council Tax pages. You can also work it back from your bill if you know your band: divide the bill by the band share, such as 8/9 for Band C.

How much is the single person discount?

25% off your bill if you are the only adult living in the home.

Who pays Council Tax?

Usually the people who live in the home, whether they own or rent. Some people, such as full-time students, are exempt.

Can I get help paying it?

Yes. Many councils offer a Council Tax Reduction for low incomes, and you should tell them if you are struggling before you fall behind.

Is what I type stored or shared?
