Council Tax Reduction explained

How low-income households can cut their council tax bill, and how to apply.

The short answer

Council Tax Reduction, sometimes called Council Tax Support, can cut your council tax bill by up to 100% if you are on a low income or claim benefits. You can be working, unemployed, a tenant or a homeowner. Each council runs its own scheme, so what you get depends on where you live.

What decides how much you get

  • Your income and your household's savings.
  • Pensions and a partner's income.
  • The number of children you support.
  • Other adults who live with you.
  • Your residency status.

How to apply

  • Contact your local council. The GOV.UK page has a postcode lookup to find the right one.
  • Apply even if you are not sure you qualify, because schemes differ.
  • Keep paying your bill while you wait, if you can, as the reduction may be backdated.
  • Tell the council if your income or household changes.

Other council tax help

  • Single person discount: people who live alone usually get a discount on the bill.
  • Some groups can be exempt or get a disability reduction.
  • If you are struggling to pay, speak to your council early and see free debt advice, because council tax debt can escalate quickly.
